3rd Grade Abstract Line Resists!

This was our first project of the year. I always begin with each grade level learning about line. By the time students are in third grade, most students already know many different types of lines so some of this was review for them. In this project, however, we learned how to use different types of lines to make abstract art.
On day one I gave the students a worksheet on lines and a sheet of white drawing paper. I drew each line on the board one at a time. As I drew each line, the students copied the line down on their worksheets. Then, I asked the students to chose one crayon. I gave them 30 seconds to use that crayon to draw the first type of line on their worksheet any way they wanted to on their drawing paper, making sure they pressed down really hard and dark with their crayon. Then they switched crayon colors and we spent 30 seconds on the next line and continued on that same way until they had a unique abstract design using all the lines.

The next class we used watercolors to paint a resist over the lines. They were instructed to use the paint in an abstract way as well, drawing attention to any images they saw within their abstract design.

Biblical Integration: Like their are many different types of lines, there are many different ways the world tells us that we can get to Heaven. However, there is only one way and that is through Jesus Christ.
