Beginning of the Year Fun!
After a first day of going over rules and procedures, I was anxious for the students to start having some fun! (And so were they!) I had made a template of a pair of glasses and made a copy for each student. The students decorated the glasses however they wanted to.
The next class, the students cut out their glasses and put them on while we read the book "All Things Bright and Beautiful".
The book is about how God created everything in the world. When we finished reading I had the students each say something that they thought that God made that was beautiful to them. We then talked about how God created everything we see and enjoy. I told the students that we are similar to God in many ways. We can feel jealousy, anger, and love and sadness just like God does. I asked the students how we are also like God when we are creating art. We then discussed how we share the ability to create with God and how we can use that ability to feel closer to him and relate to him in a special way. We are going to use the glasses throughout the year to see things through God's eyes. It was a great intro lesson to get the kids thinking about art and how we can use it to relate to God.
